AI-generated pictures claiming to portray Nicolás Maduro under arrest after his apprehension by the American authorities have amassed tens of millions of impressions on social media.
The first fabricated AI image seemingly displaying him being escorted off a plane emerged shortly after. The picture was unpublished by any authoritative US channels; rather, it was uploaded on X by an profile purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Our analysis used an AI-watermark detector, which found the picture was produced or modified with AI tools.
More synthetic images began to spread in the subsequent hours, purporting to present different views of the leader under guard. Noticeable identifying marks on these pictures reveal they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
AI analysis says these additional images were similarly produced using Google AI.
Donald Trump shared the genuine photograph of Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. However, despite the authentic image was made public, synthetic images kept circulating but were updated to incorporate the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation indicate the new fake images were originally uploaded on TikTok by a digital art account. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector says the new graphics were generated or edited Google AI.
