In the course of a recent visit to Japan's capital, ex- American leader Trump together with the Japanese recently elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi exchanged friendly praise and vowed to enhance the already strong two-way relations.
Trump praised Takaichi as a ‘great’ leader and applauded her on becoming the nation's first female premier. In their talks at the capital's Akasaka Palace, Trump expressed optimism that Takaichi would prove to be one of the ‘outstanding leaders’ of the country.
Takaichi, identified as a protégée of late Prime Minister Abe, praised his initiatives to address international conflicts and reportedly pledged to nominate Trump for the prestigious award.
The two nations revealed a series of joint projects in areas such as power, AI, and critical minerals. Japanese companies are considering funding of up to $400 billion in the US.
Furthermore, Japan had earlier pledged $550bn in strategic American projects, loans, and assurances as part of an agreement to secure relief from Trump's tariffs.
Such moves are viewed as potentially easing any future demands from the US side for Japan to boost its military expenditure. Takaichi addressed this by promising to accelerate plans to raise defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product.
“Everything I know from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the great prime ministers,” Trump said to the prime minister. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he continued.
This meeting underscores the ongoing importance of the American-Japanese alliance and sets the stage for further collaboration on trade, security, and diplomatic fronts.
